Common Questions from Pilates Beginners, and Answers that Will Make You Breathe Easier
I often find myself rooted in the same patterns and routines from week to week. There is comfort in repetition, and when I find a community that I like, it’s easy and delicious to stay put in the familiar. However, if you’re looking to switch up your workout, or if it’s been a while since you’ve considered working out in a public space…the intimidation is real. This is especially true if you’re trying a new workout (like Pilates!) for the first time.
So, for all you Potential Pilates Practitioners who are on the brink of glory, with your index finger hovering over the “Signup Now” button, go ahead and press that button! The following (real) questions from first-time Pilates practitioners will provide some helpful answers that will show you that you’re not alone (we all have questions!) and will give you the confidence to walk into your new Pilates studio like an absolute luminary.
Do I have to wear trendy workout clothes?
Of course not! We encourage you to wear whatever you're comfortable wearing...including sweatpants! We love seeing t-shirts that have been sitting at the bottom of your drawer for years and have nowhere else to go....they can come to Pilates.
What’s the best hairdo for Pilates?
You may think this is a wild question, but here's a Pilates hair tip: Comfort is key! Certain hairstyles make it hard to lay flat on your back. If you’re new to Pilates, you may not be thinking about this. However, hairstyles like mid-level ponytails make it uncomfortable for your head to rest on the mat, and the very trendy claw clip can become more of an enemy and may mess with your alignment. Instead, go for side braids, a high bun, a low ponytail, or a headband.
Can I do Pilates if I have an injury?
At The Pilates Room NYC, we take injuries seriously. If you’ve received clearance from your doctor or physical therapist, we can tailor Pilates exercises to meet your specific needs and concerns.
Private sessions are an excellent way to explore modifications and focus on what you can do. If you’re interested in joining a group session despite your injury, let the instructor know in advance so they can make the necessary adjustments to keep you safe.
What if I can’t do any of the moves?
No one expects a first time practitioner to walk in like John Wayne and nail every move with one eye closed and a toothpick in your mouth. If it’s your first session, make sure your instructor knows—there’s no shame in being new! In fact, in our studio, trying something new commands respect. Your instructor will show you what to do, and talk you through it. As they do, they’ll assess your strength and flexibility; at that point, they’ll be able to get a baseline for where you are in your practice and will develop exercises specifically tailored to you so that you can improve from week-to-week. (Also, for the record, we don’t ever recommend doing Pilates with a toothpick in your mouth, or anything else but your tongue).
Do I have to remember all the moves?
Feeling overwhelmed by all the exercises? Do you have to remember every single one? In the correct order? And what if you can’t keep up?
No need to stress! Focus on how your body feels as you try out the new moves. Over time, you’ll naturally remember the exercises, names and transitions. As you get more comfortable, your focus will shift away from the choreography and setup, allowing you to improve the quality of each movement. And don’t forget, your instructor is there to cue the next movement and to help you find your footing (figuratively and literally).
Can I do Pilates while I’m pregnant?
Yes, BUT it’s important to consult with your doctor and get the go-ahead before you jump in. If you are cleared for exercise and new to Pilates, private sessions will allow you to make accommodations based on what your changing body can do and how you are feeling from day-to-day. If you are already a Pilates pro and have been practicing in groups for a while, and if you feel pretty good, you can stick with your routine and modify it along the way.
Why should I do Pilates?
Great question. With all the workouts available today, why choose Pilates over anything else? First off, the best workout is the one you’ll stick to, so if you find a workout you really love, that’s the one for you.
However, perhaps you’re looking to try a new exercise? Perhaps you’re looking to supplement your running or weightlifting routine with a different kind of strength building? Perhaps you’ve been out of the workout game for a few years, and you’re looking to ease back into exercise? Perhaps you’re a dancer and you need help strengthening your core? Perhaps you’ve suffered an injury and you’re ready to get back to moving in a safe environment?
Pilates is a challenging workout that’s easy on the joints and can be modified for any level of fitness. It is very focused on strengthening core muscles, which can be beneficial for your posture and your everyday activities, and it can also help you get in shape for your next cycling trip in the Alps, or whatever extreme sport you’re into. Strengthening your core, practicing muscle control and learning to breathe with intention can help you reduce stress, get stronger and begin to fully inhabit your body.
